123 Andrés is the Latin Grammy-winning team husband-wife team of Andrés and Christina, and they have performed for audiences across the US and in Puerto Rico, Panama, Mexico and Colombia. Their catchy songs and lively concerts get the whole family dancing and learning, in Spanish and English.

Born from the ashes of the popular Bowie-Idol project, Vashon based Record Producer & Mixing Engineer, Martin Feveyear, has formed a brand new 9-piece rock & roll group "Bowie/Rex & His Boogie Army".

Performing a mix of music from David Bowie, Marc Bolan & T-Rex, Roxy Music, The Cars, The Kinks, Talking Heads, Joy Division and more, “Bowie/Rex & His Boogie Army” features some of the region’s finest musicians.

With Dave Dederer (Presidents of the USA, Duff McKagan’s Loaded) and Tim Dijulio (Lazy Suzan, Flight to Mars) on guitars, Michael Musburger (The Posies, The Fastbacks) on drums, Billy Stover (Dusty 45’s, Victoria Contreras) on keyboards and Jeremy Lightfoot (Danny Newcomb, Elvez) on bass, the band is rounded out by front-man Martin Feveyear (Producer of Brandi Carlisle, Presidents of the USA, Duff McKagan of Guns n Roses, and Islanders St Ophelia, Kat Eggleston & Gregg Curry) and backing singers “The Suffragette Sisters (Rhiannon Walther, Sarah Howard & Melissa Feveyear).

Martin reflects: “Marc Bolan, David Bowie, and the Glam music of the early 70’s was the music of my childhood. My mother playing and singing along to the 45 of Sorrow, is one of my fondest preschool memories. At the age of 5, I had a poster on my wall of the magical and mysterious Ziggy Stardust. The Music of that time, Bowie’s music especially, has had a huge impact on me, he’s been there during every decade of my life. Losing him in 2016 was very hard to swallow. I suppose being in this band, is a blatant way of reconnecting with that music and his loss?”

The Portland band Glitterfox has released five singles in just six months under their new record label Kill Rock Stars, with two more singles arriving this spring. The band’s been growing steadily since “Drive” came out in August 2023, with their indie rock cocktail that deftly balances nostalgia-fueled anthems with Southern shine. The four-piece band’s songwriters and frontpersons, married couple Solange Igoa and Andrea Walker, have always channeled their personal struggles as well as experiences as queer, neurodivergent individuals into their songwriting. Bassist Eric Stalker and drummer Blaine Heinonen bring a love of Americana, grunge, and dance music into the mix. All of these influences can be heard on the band’s latest singles, produced by Chris Funk of The Decemberists, and in their spirited live shows as they prepare for their full-length album debut in 2025.

Jon Langford’s been in more bands than you have digits – and that’s true even if you were born with a few extras! From his early days in Mekons, Delta 5, Three Johns and even Sisters Of Mercy (booted for not wearing black) to a veritable explosion of one-off recordings and performances with more names than we could ever hope to list in full. A Wikipedia description for this group, The Bright Shiners (described therein as ‘circa 2022 through at least 2023, in Northern California’) provides some sense of the complex taxonomy needed just to keep track of Jon’s massive oeuvre. Happily, that’s an understated description of a serious new outlet for his endless creativity, and The Bright Shiners’ recording activities have produced a full album, Where It Really Starts, the first recording in a collaboration with Tamineh Gueramy, Alice Spencer, and Jon’s frequent musical partner, John Szymanski.

Loose Change is a longtime Vashon favorite and this band aims to entertain with non-stop danceable tunes - R&B, swing, and the occasional disco hit. Inspired by the movie “The Commitments,” the band’s leader and powerful front man Troy Kindred is an entertainer in every sense of the word. His infectious energy and enthusiasm gets the crowd into the act – and his vocals will tear the paint off the back walls. Kindred is backed by a tight band with a solid rhythm section, dynamic horns and the backup singers add sass and spice. The sheer size of Loose Change makes for a big sound and a fun show.

Sinner and the Saints is a rock and roll band consisting of all current or former Vashon residents. Its members have all been in many different island groups, and they have shared the stage with each other in various combinations going back over 40 years. Playing everything from oldies and rock standards to innovative renditions of modern hits, their years of experience and depth of talent are a guarantee for a great show.

The Sinner of the group, Loren plays bass and sings. Equally comfortable on piano and guitar, you have likely seen this local musician on stage during his many years in the Vashon music scene. Raised in a musical family, Loren finds time to perform while raising a family and running his local business.

Guitarist Jerry Todo is a highly skilled and accomplished player. Known for getting just the right sound, his amazing solos have been delighting audiences for years. A former Doily Brother, Jerry has also played the big stages. Picked out of 90 applicants, he toured as the guitarist for the Anne Murray band. He was also the long time musical partner of the late John Hjorten.

Guitarist Scotty Johnson lives and breathes rock and roll. Also a long time member of the Doily Brothers, Scotty has played in many Seattle bands over the years. He currently plays with the Elements of Rock, and is sought after for his guitar and vocal skills. An oldies specialist, he often dedicates songs to his beloved late father, island sign painter Les Johnson.

It would be easier to list the bands that drummer Brett Bacchus has not played in than the ones he has. Simply put, Brett is Vashon's drummer. Another Doily Brother legend, Brett  is truly the foundation of island rock.

Formed from a lineup of veteran Seattle-area musicians, Wild Rumours performs the music of Fleetwood Mac with love and respect, authenticity and flair. Focusing on the classic albums of the band’s 1970s heyday, Wild Rumours creates a Fleetwood Mac experience designed to transport fans and deliver the music of 1975’s Fleetwood Mac and 1977’s Rumours in all its timeless glory.  Originally conceived as a one-night tribute to these two iconic albums, the members of Wild Rumours found the joy of playing these songs together an irresistible elixir and have since taken their show to stages around the Pacific Northwest. Fronted by the extraordinary vocals and stage presence of Jen Ayers, Wild Rumours is buttressed by the formidable rhythm section of Geoff Reading and Richard Davidson, and flanked by the instrumental prowess of Paul Hiraga, Patrick Porter and Kathy Moore.

Djeliyah Band members bring the beat of mother Africa:

Orchestrated by the multi-talented Djely Aboubacar “Boka” Kouyaté from Guinea in West Africa, The Djeliyah Band began February 2015 in Seattle, Washington. The name Djeliyah means; the work of the Djely people in the community. Djely’s or Griots have always been next to the Kings in the Mande Empire as Cultural Educators, the traditional historians, artist and musicians of Culture.

Boka connects this rich traditional music to Global music; a harmonic fusion between the traditional Griot music, the afro beat and the modern Guinea music which provides a highlife sound for your listening and dancing pleasure.

The band has played at the Nectar Lounge, Rumba Notes Lounge, Festival Sundiata, Columbia City Theatre, The Triple Door, and during The Movie showcase for “ROOTS”.

The Pazific creates tropical movement music with a latin psychedelic twist for people looking to feel so free they can’t help but let loose. When our music comes on you’ll be dancing before you know it, transported to a place of joy where you can connect with those around you. The 8-piece band is led by Seattle-based duo Alex and Jefferson Rose. Much of their music is influenced by Alex's Mexican heritage and California upbringing, and Jefferson's time living and making music in Latin America and Spain.

One More Mile is a blues group from Vashon Island fronted by “The Principal” Jason Lollar (vocals/lead guitar) and “Lonesome” Mike Nichols (vocals/harmonica)- a musical brotherhood going back decades.

This partnership of tone wizardry is dedicated to rocking the joint in the old school way- playing inspired original grooves and classic blues, funk, and rock and roll covers in the vein of James Cotton, Albert Collins, Little Walter and The Meters.

Rounding out the band are keyboardist/ vocalist Chris O’Brien, bassist/ vocalist Chuck Keller, pedal steel extraordinaire Dan Tyack and drummer/ vocalist Wesley Peterson.

The Reptile Man. Zoologist, educator, and author Scott Petersen presents 12 live reptiles in a 40-minute show that teaches the importance of all animals in nature. Scott has been featured nationally on Disney's Bill Nye the Science Guy and on PBS' Biz Kids. He has appeared on Northwest Afternoon, Evening Magazine, and NPR Radio.

The 42nd Bill Burby Inspirational Run/Walk will begin at 8:30 AM on Saturday, July 20, 2024. The starting and ending will be at the VES Fields (Harbor School).

This is a longstanding community event, not put on by the Chamber of Commerce.

Don’t miss The Portage Fill Band on Saturday night from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at this year’s Strawberry Festival! The Portage Fill Street Dance is an island tradition not to be missed! As in the past, they will be set up in the center of town on the street in front of Sporty’s.

For over 50 years, the Portage Fill Big Band has been an integral part of the musical life of Vashon Island. A perennial Strawberry Festival favorite, the Portage Fill Big Band continues to entertain with exciting and danceable music from the Big Band era and beyond.

The Portage Fill Big Band is Vashon's oldest "garage band" with their unique brand of dance music. With well over 300 tunes to choose from, the Portage Fill promises an entertaining show for listeners and dancers alike.

Made up of almost two dozen current or former island residents, Portage Fill is a classic "Big Band" with full horn and sax sections, backed up by a complete rhythm section, and features 2 vocalists for the crowd's listening and dancing pleasure. Portage Fill is well known for their selection of Big Band swing tunes from the 30's and 40's, but is versatile enough to work in some blues, Latin, or even rock and roll numbers to put on a show for all ages and musical tastes.

Whether you're there to dance or listen, the Portage Fill is a band you don't want to miss!

Dig Deep's Strawberry Pre-Funk
Dig Deep Gardens
Thursday, July 18th
5:00pm: Doors
6:00pm: Live music by Croaker
8:00pm: Live music by Subconscious Population

IT"S HAPPENING! Strawberry Pre Funk at Dig Deep! Let's Get this Party Going, like only SUB POP and CROAKER know how! Let's get Funkafied!!! Thursday before Strawberry Festival. There's Food and Beer and Wine and Great Music! And lots and lots of Dancing!! THURSDAY July 18th. 5pm for Food!

Croaker makes acoustic music with new-grass attitude, old-time instruments and bad-ass bass lines. On a good night, traditional tunes keep company with classic rock favorites and improvised gems. The band brings a wide rage of influences to bear when interpreting existing music or writing their own songs. Jazz, cajun and klezmer music are all part of the mix. This seasoned quartet includes Steve Meyer on bass, Kim Thal on violin, Eric Frith on guitar and banjo, and Andre Sapp on mandolin and guitar. As Pink Floyd once said, “Blind Faith is better with a dash of Sugaree”

Subconscious Population…a band that everyone knows and is a huge part of Island history when it comes to music. If you think that maybe, just maybe… on a quiet summer night, sitting on your porch perhaps…you might have heard wisps of “Jah Lee Kali”, “Funkified” or “One in a Million” floating through the air…you just might have.

Yes, one of the island’s most mysterious and captivating bands ever is back at it and having a blast blazing through their classic songs, as well as creating their own spin on some very cool covers. Like Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here”…or Jimi’s “All Along The Watchtower”. These boys are having some fun and if you’re lucky, you’ll hear some of that from your porch, if the wind carries it just right. Now it’s time we call them out for one of their captivating magical mystery shows…

Strawberry Festival Friday!
Vashon Sugar Shack
Friday, July 19th
7:00pm

Kinski is a four-piece rock band from Seattle, WA. The band follows their instincts to explore pathways from visceral guitar rock, to sonic and heady avant-psych rock, and sparse, atmosphere-bending instrumentals. NME has described Kinski as: “Like Sabbath in a washing machine during a power surge.” Comprised of guitarists Chris Martin and Matthew Reid-Schwartz (Matthew also plays keyboards and flute), bassist Lucy Atkinson, and drummer Barrett Wilke, Kinski has toured with Mission of Burma, Comets on Fire, Oneida, Mono, Black Mountain, Acid Mothers Temple, and opened a month of dates for Tool on their spring ’07 tour.

Patrons of Husbandry are a new island band whose members include Jeff Roeser, Ethan Cudaback, Scott Boggan, and Rusty Willoughby. The music swirls and recalls a bit of Scott and Rusty's 1980's Seattle bands Room Nine and Pure Joy. Fueled by Colorado Kool-Aid and Washington's finest , POH also enjoy casual time travel and shape changing.

Tramp Harbor is a 3 piece killer island band with Gaven Dehnert, Joziah Rosenbaum and Jake Bowden.

Skyler Ford & the Legion of Peace is fronted by another Vashon High kid and former member of Seattle indie darlings and KEXP favorite Snuff Redux!

Alerts are broadcast on 1650AM and the Voice of Vashon streaming app. They are published in text for email subscribers to this Emergency Alert System as well as the VoV Facebook page and the Voice of Vashon website.

We encourage you to develop your 1650AM listening habit because an AM radio signal may be your only source of information in a serious island emergency.

The Vashon Maury Community Food Bank will be offering sack lunches, similar to the Picnics in the Parks program (simple pb&j/turkey/ham sandwiches, fruit/veggie, hummus, string cheese, granola bar etc.). Lunches will be available for donation at their booth during Festival open hours all weekend for any kids or adults looking for additional food options.

Vashon Presbyterian Church is offering limited parking and front lawn chairs for the Strawberry Festival parade on Saturday, July 20. Parking and chairs are by reservation only. There is no fee, but donations will be accepted and forwarded to the Journeymen Institute on Vashon. Reservations may be made by sending an e-mail to Bob Spangler at rwspang@centurytel.net; please indicate how many parking spots and seats are requested. If a wheelchair place is required, please note that.

Remember - all those people out there working during Strawberry Festival are doing just that...they're working on the busiest weekend of the year. Many of them are your brothers and sisters that live here on the island, some are from off-island. They are working hard, many of them in the hot sun. Take a moment to appreciate them and let them know we see you.
