VRT'S Incubator Series- Women Playwrights
March 6-9, 2025
Vashon Center for the Arts
Women Take the Stage in March at Vashon Rep

Vashon Repertory Theatre will celebrate Northwest women playwrights March 6 through 9 with a series of five play readings in its fifth annual Incubator Series of new plays. The four-day event, staged in the Kay White Hall at Vashon Center for the Arts, opens with an original play by Islander Deb McCabe titled A Place Like This, March 6 at 7:30 pm. In her one-act, McCabe presents a dystopian view of a tomorrow where a family must hide from radical oppression. On March 7, at 7:30pm VRT presents Angel of Belgrade by Kendra Phillips, based on the true story of a Serbian woman in her 70s reflecting on her life as a teen during the Holocaust.

Saturday, March 8 marks International Women’s Day when Vashon Repertory Theatre joins forces with Vashon’s Women Hold the Key collective and Vashon Center for the Arts in a full day of praising feminine creativity. Go to the VCA website for details at: https://vashoncenterforthearts.org/

VRT’s Incubator Series on that day will stage two plays. At 2:00 pm, Becoming Awesome, by three-time Incubator Series contributor Y York, is a young woman’s coming of age story with a tender twist. At 7:30 pm that day, Mercy, a musical by Elizabeth Heffron and Hope Wechkin, brings to the stage Seattle Theatre star Sarah Rudinoff to lead a cast of the Island's best singer/actors as they make their way through the ups and downs of trying to save lives in a crazy healthcare system.

The Incubator Series finale on Sunday, March 9 at 2:00 pm, is an adventure tale by Maggie Lee titled Sheathed, which tells the story of a fictional fantastical universe ten years after a long, devastating civil war between the followers of Lord Tsuka and the Empress Kaji. This play will be a fun ride for the entire family.

Every Incubator Series play will close with a talkback and opportunity for audience feedback. This part of each reading is essential to support the playwright in developing her work for eventual full staging. Tickets are just $25 for each play and can be purchased individually or in a discount package of $100 for all five. Available now at vashonrepertorytheatre.org.

The Incubator Series is a traditional part of Vashon Repertory Theatre’s mission to produce thought-provoking, intimate, story-driven theatre that brings to light issues meaningful to our time and place on Earth. These play readings are especially important because they invite theatre lovers’ input.
