Explore the Art of Gift-Giving During the Vashon Island Holiday Studio Tour

Vashon Island artists offer art lovers and gift shoppers a fun and inspirational event, the Vashon Island Holiday Studio Tour, Saturdays and Sundays, December 7-8 and 14-15, 2024, from 10 am to 4 pm. The tour, which is organized by Vashon Island Visual Artists, features 44 studios and galleries representing more than 140 artists and craftspeople. The organization’s website also offers an interactive online map with details about each studio or gallery at https://vivartists.com. Tour locations are spread throughout the island community from the town center to outlying farms and shores, providing an escape for urban visitors. Brochures are being mailed to each home on Vashon and can also be picked up at most of Vashon’s restaurants and realtor offices.

“The studio tour is a cherished holiday tradition,” said Gale Lurie, VIVA president, “The island’s artists have been busily working for months to create new pieces for the tour. We look forward to sharing our art with long-time neighbors and new friends.”

In addition to exploring a variety of media and styles, visitors will have the chance to meet the artist behind each work and view the space where the art took shape. During the VIVA Holiday Tour attendees can purchase one-of-a-kind pieces to brighten their homes or as the perfect holiday gift.

Tour creations run the gamut from items that are beautifully functional to those that are decidedly decorative, including oil paintings, ceramics, pastels, blown glass, linocuts, monoprints, acrylics, watercolors, photography, fiber arts such as knitting and weaving, jewelry, basketry, woodwork, stained glass, stonework, mosaics, garden art, sculpture, art cards, etched glass, artisan soap, holiday wreaths and more.

New additions to the tour include neon artist, Alleson Buchanan, who will demo glass bending during the tour at her studio, Radiant Neon, stop 6; Carly Reiter who showcases stained glass designs in digitally-cut cedar panels at Garbanzo Glass, stop 24; and photographer Lee Hendrickson who turns the tiny faceted surface of crystals into dramatic landscapes at his studio, stop 31.

A large number of stops feature artist collectives including Craig’s Crossing, stop 42, which offers the works of seven artists; 3 Potters Studio, stop 23 which features, you guessed it, three potters; Valise Gallery, stop 32, offering the works of twelve artists; Dockton Pottery, stop 7, with eight artists; Handmade on Vashon, stop 44, with 20 island artists; The Willingham Weavery, stop 18 with 12 fiber artists; and Swiftwater Gallery, stop 33, featuring the works of 57 Vashon artists.

Many of the stops are inspired by family connections from the mother-daughter combos at Frog Holler Studios, stop 35 and Cory Winn Pottery, stop 5; to a pair of sisters at Kathy Larsdotter Studio, stop 2; to husband and wife duos at BrennoStudio, stop 40; WabiSabi Studios, stop 30; Roots & Dreams Studio, stop 22; and Outstanding In Its Field Gallery, stop 25; and finally the Reimnitz Studio, aptly titled “One Family’s Art,” which features the works of a husband, wife and their son at stop 11.

Vashon Island offers a green getaway that combines rural charm with sophisticated tastes. Island restaurants serve an array of cuisines from Thai and vegetarian to southern comfort. For more information on Vashon Island, including where to stay and eat, visit https://VashonEvents.org.
